The Botanical Society of America's Publications Team welcomes graduate students and postdocs who are interested in joining our Early Career Advisory Board (ECAB).
This group of early-career botanists engages with and advises the editors of the American Journal of Botany, Applications in Plant Sciences, and the Plant Science Bulletin in a number of ways, including recommending timely topics for review papers and special issues; sharing questions and advice on peer-review and manuscript preparation; and advising on broad issues of importance to early-career researchers and the publications team. Service on the advisory board can also be a stepping-stone to joining the editorial board as an Associate Editor.
Advisory Board members are featured on the Botanical Society of America website and receive free membership in the society, opportunities to participate in editorial board meetings, and will gain experience and insight into how the scientific publishing process works.
Member Criteria
Committee membership is open to all postdocs and senior graduate students. Members of the ECAB are expected to attend an initial orientation meeting and additional quarterly (approximately every three months) hour-long Zoom meetings. Preparation for each meeting may take a few hours, and includes doing some independent research and thinking through the discussion topics ahead of time to ensure that members are well-informed and ready to offer recommendations addressing agenda items and related topics that may arise.
Past and Present BSA members can log in with their BotanyID, which is also the same as a Botany Conference ID. If you do not have one, you can get one here.
Time Commitment
At least four meetings per year and an initial orientation meeting, plus time spent preparing for discussions. Members serve two-year terms.
Students
Senior graduate students and postdocs; undergraduates are not eligible for this position.
